Bone Grafting

North Shore Periodontics, Bone Grafting Dental Experts

Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option you can have to fix your missing teeth. However, this dental procedure requires a healthy bone structure to latch onto. The natural healing process for missing teeth can result in a loss of bone tissue. Other dental conditions such as infections or trauma also cause bone loss. To regrow your lost bone tissue, periodontists use a procedure called bone grafting to make implant treatment possible.

Bone grafting is one of the essential processes in restorative dentistry that creates a foundation for tooth restoration. If it’s a minimal issue, you can have a minor bone grafting surgery before the actual dental implant treatment. However, if your bone loss is extensive, you need to undergo a separate restorative surgery months before the dental implant surgery.

How does Bone Grafting Work?

When you visit our clinic for tooth replacement, we will do a series of scans to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the treatment. This will include an examination of your bone structures to check bone density and other factors that could affect the procedure. Afterwards, we will discuss your options if you need to undergo bone grafting.

Before the surgery itself, we will create a 3D image of your jawbone that will aid the procedure. The material for the bone grafting will be taken from your own available bone usually from your lower jaw or chin, a donor bone, or synthetic materials. Bone grafting will have a higher chance of success if the material was taken from your own body.

We will use local anaesthesia if it is a minor procedure. A small incision will be made in your gums to expose the bone underneath. The grafting material is then added to the bone. The material is then absorbed by your body and replaced by new bone.
